NHS Benefits Available with Pension Credit

One of the most significant gateway benefits of Pension Credit (specifically Guarantee Credit) is automatic entitlement to a range of free NHS health services. These can save you hundreds of pounds each year and ensure you can access healthcare without worrying about the cost.

If you receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, you are automatically entitled to:

  • Free NHS dental treatment — including check-ups, fillings, root canal treatment, crowns, bridges, and dentures
  • Free NHS sight tests — full eye examinations at any optician
  • Vouchers towards glasses or contact lenses — helping cover the cost of prescription eyewear
  • Free NHS wigs and fabric supports
  • Help with travel costs to hospital — reimbursement of fares for NHS treatment
Already free for over-60s: NHS prescriptions in England are already free for everyone aged 60 or over. In Scotland and Wales, prescriptions are free for all residents regardless of age. So Pension Credit does not add a prescription benefit for most pensioners — but the dental and optical benefits are extremely valuable.

Free NHS Dental Treatment: What Is Covered?

NHS dental treatment can be expensive if you are paying full price. With Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, all NHS dental treatment is free. This covers:

NHS Dental BandNormal Cost (England, 2025/26)With Pension Credit
Band 1 — Check-up, diagnosis, X-rays, scale and polish£26.80Free
Band 2 — Fillings, extractions, root canal£73.50Free
Band 3 — Crowns, bridges, dentures£319.10Free

The savings can be substantial, particularly if you need more complex treatment. A full set of dentures, for example, would normally cost £319.10 per course of treatment. Over a few years, free dental treatment can easily be worth £500 or more.

Important: Only NHS dental treatment is free with Pension Credit. Private dental treatment is not covered. When you visit the dentist, make sure you are being treated as an NHS patient, not privately. Ask your dentist to confirm this before treatment begins. If you are struggling to find an NHS dentist accepting new patients, call NHS 111 for help.

How to Claim Free Dental Treatment

When you visit an NHS dentist, you will be asked to sign a form (FP17DC or equivalent) before treatment. On this form, tick the box confirming you receive Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit). You do not need to show your award letter at the appointment, but keep it safe as the NHS Business Services Authority may check your entitlement afterwards.

If your entitlement cannot be confirmed, you may receive a penalty charge notice. If you do receive one in error, contact the NHS Business Services Authority with proof of your Pension Credit award to have it cancelled.

Free NHS Sight Tests and Optical Vouchers

Regular eye tests are important for detecting not just vision problems but also conditions like glaucoma, diabetes, and high blood pressure. With Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, you are entitled to:

  • Free NHS sight tests — normally costing around £25-30 at most opticians
  • NHS optical vouchers — these contribute towards the cost of glasses or contact lenses. The voucher value depends on your prescription but typically ranges from £39.10 to £215.50

You are entitled to a free sight test every two years (or more frequently if your optician recommends it). To claim, simply tell the optician you receive Pension Credit Guarantee Credit when booking your appointment.

Sight tests for over-60s: Everyone aged 60 or over in the UK is already entitled to free NHS sight tests, regardless of whether they receive Pension Credit. However, the optical vouchers for glasses are an additional benefit available through Pension Credit that is not available based on age alone.

Help with Hospital Travel Costs

If you need to travel to hospital for NHS treatment (including outpatient appointments, day surgery, and planned admissions), you can claim back your travel costs through the Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (HTCS).

With Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, you are entitled to full reimbursement of reasonable travel costs, including:

  • Bus, train, or taxi fares
  • Mileage allowance if you drive (currently 25p per mile)
  • Parking charges at NHS hospitals

To claim, keep your appointment letter and travel receipts. Ask at the hospital reception or the NHS trust's patient services department for a travel claim form after your appointment.

What About Savings Credit Only?

If you receive only Savings Credit (without Guarantee Credit), you do not automatically qualify for free NHS treatment. However, you may still be able to get help through the NHS Low Income Scheme (LIS):

  1. Complete an HC1 form (available from Jobcentre Plus, NHS hospitals, or by calling 0300 330 1343)
  2. The NHS Business Services Authority will assess your income and savings
  3. If eligible, you will receive an HC2 certificate (full help) or HC3 certificate (partial help)

An HC2 certificate provides the same free NHS treatments as Pension Credit Guarantee Credit. An HC3 certificate provides partial help, reducing the amount you pay.

Claiming Refunds for Past Treatment

If your Pension Credit claim was backdated and you paid for NHS dental treatment, sight tests, or travel to hospital during the backdated period, you can claim a refund:

  • Complete an HC5 refund claim form (available from the NHS Business Services Authority)
  • Include your receipts and proof of Pension Credit entitlement
  • Submit within three months of paying for the treatment
