Why HSBC funds turn up in so many UK pensions
HSBC Asset Management runs some of the cheapest multi-asset and index funds available to UK retail investors, and they are stocked by most of the big SIPP platforms. Unlike a bank account, you do not need to bank with HSBC to hold them – the funds sit inside whatever pension wrapper you already use. The question is which of the line-up actually earns a place in a retirement pot, because the range spans everything from ultra-cautious multi-asset portfolios to single-country trackers.
The core HSBC pension fund line-up
| Fund | Type | Risk level | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global Strategy Adventurous | Multi-asset, equity-heavy | High | Long-horizon growth in one fund |
| Global Strategy Dynamic | Multi-asset | Medium-high | Growth with a small bond cushion |
| Global Strategy Balanced | Multi-asset | Medium | The classic middle-of-the-road default |
| Global Strategy Conservative | Multi-asset, bond-heavy | Low-medium | Savers within sight of retirement |
| Global Strategy Cautious | Multi-asset, mostly bonds | Low | Capital preservation over growth |
| HSBC FTSE All-World Index | Global equity tracker | High | DIY investors wanting pure global equities |
| HSBC Islamic Global Equity Index | Sharia-compliant tracker | High | Sharia-compliant retirement saving |

Global Strategy: the ready-made option
The Global Strategy portfolios are HSBC's answer to Vanguard LifeStrategy: one fund that holds thousands of global shares and bonds via index trackers, rebalanced for you. The typical published OCF sits around 0.18–0.25% depending on the portfolio – verify the exact figure on the factsheet – which undercuts LifeStrategy's 0.22% at the cheaper end. Two design differences matter. First, Global Strategy has no deliberate UK home bias, so your equity exposure follows global market weights. Second, the portfolios are risk-targeted rather than fixed-allocation: the managers hold each fund within a volatility band instead of pinning it to a fixed equity percentage, so the equity split can drift a few points either way.
The trackers: for DIY builders
If you would rather assemble your own allocation, the HSBC FTSE All-World Index fund is one of the cheapest ways to own the entire global stock market in a single holding, and it is a staple on low-cost platform lists. Pair it with a bond fund in whatever ratio suits your timeline. The Islamic Global Equity Index applies Sharia screening to a global large-cap index and is one of very few mainstream, low-cost options for faith-compliant pension investing.
Who each fund suits
- 20s–40s, decades from retirement: Adventurous or Dynamic, or the All-World tracker if you are happy with 100% equities and the volatility that brings.
- 50s, retirement on the horizon: Balanced is the natural midpoint; some savers step down to Conservative as their retirement date firms up.
- At or in retirement: Cautious or Conservative can steady a drawdown pot, though holding some equities usually still makes sense over a 25–30 year retirement.
- Hands-off by preference: any Global Strategy fund – the rebalancing is done for you.
How to actually hold HSBC funds in a pension
HSBC's funds are available through most mainstream SIPPs and investment platforms – our guide to the best SIPP providers compares the wrappers. Remember the platform fee stacks on top of the fund OCF, so a 0.20% fund on a 0.45% platform costs you 0.65% all-in. Many workplace schemes also offer Global Strategy or HSBC trackers on their self-select fund lists – check your scheme's fund menu before assuming you need to move anything.
Alternatives worth comparing
The obvious rivals are Vanguard's LifeStrategy and Target Retirement ranges – see our best Vanguard pension fund guide – plus BlackRock's MyMap and L&G's Multi-Index families, both covered in our BlackRock and Legal & General fund reviews. The differences between these ready-made ranges are modest; charges, home bias and risk-management style are the real distinguishing features.
Verdict
HSBC Global Strategy is a credible, cheap, one-fund answer for a pension at any life stage – arguably the closest genuine rival to LifeStrategy, with a more global flavour. The trackers suit DIY investors who want building blocks rather than a finished portfolio. If you are unsure which risk level fits your timeline, or whether to consolidate old pots to hold these funds, an FCA-regulated adviser can model your exact numbers before you commit.
